Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property (IP) practice in New York. This position involves preparing and prosecuting patent applications, conducting patent landscape and freedom-to-operate analyses, and providing support for IP due diligence matters. The ideal candidate will have a background in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or computer science/software, with at least two years of experience in the field. Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications for a variety of technologies.
  • Conduct patent landscape analyses to identify trends and assess patent portfolios.
  • Perform freedom-to-operate analysis to assess potential infringement risks.
  • Provide support for IP due diligence matters in transactional settings.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients to advise on intellectual property matters.
  • Maintain an active docket of patent filings and office actions.
  • Provide input on patent strategy and portfolio management.

Requirements:

  • . Patent and Trademark Office registration or the ability to become registered.
  • A strong technical background, preferably in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or computer science/software.
  • At least 2 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably with exposure to medical devices, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or related technologies.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.

Certifications:

  • Registration with the . Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) or eligibility to become registered.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution procedures and patent law.
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to draft clear and concise patent applications and responses.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail.
