Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a Mid-Level Environmental Litigation Associate Attorney to join its San Francisco office. The successful candidate will have a robust environmental law and litigation background and expertise in vital ecological statutes and regulations. The role involves advising clients, managing litigation, and engaging with state and federal environmental agencies.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in environmental litigation, including defense of enforcement actions and regulatory compliance issues.
  • Advise clients on business decisions related to emerging environmental issues, regulatory requirements, and liability exposure.
  • Negotiate agreements related to compliance, cost recovery, and permitting or regulatory compliance matters.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and third parties verbally and in writing.
  • Produce high-quality work products, including legal documents and correspondence, and ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Foster positive working relationships and collaborate with legal professionals and business stakeholders.
  • Participate in digital/virtual conference calls and meetings as needed.
  • Engage in physical and sedentary activities, including extended computer use, on-screen reading, and typing.
  • Perform additional duties, tasks, or projects as the firm assigns.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in California.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental litigation.
  • Prior experience in a law firm or agency setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of key environmental statutes and regulations, including CERCLA, RCRA, and analogous California laws and common law.
  • Demonstrated experience in environmental litigation, regulatory compliance, and defense of enforcement actions.
  • Familiarity with California state environmental agencies is required; experience with federal agencies is preferred.
  • Significant experience advising clients on emerging environmental issues and public relations matters.
  • Experience negotiating compliance agreements and regulatory matters.
  • Comfort with environmental operations and remediation technical aspects and experience working with environmental consultants.
  • Experience with sediment-based contamination and remediation is a plus.
  • Experience representing clients in heavy, defense, chemical, and maritime industries is preferred.
