The ideal candidate should have at least 2 years of experience practicing law in California with civil trial experience. Strong legal research and writing skills are also required, along with experience in researching and writing Writs, Appeals, and preparing trial documents and briefs. Experience representing other government or public agencies at trial is a plus, and knowledge of State laws related to housing, planning and zoning, and environmental laws is desirable. The City Attorney's Office represents the City in all legal matters, including lawsuits, prosecuting crimes, and advising the City Council and officials. The Senior Trial Counsel will be responsible for handling all aspects of assigned cases, including investigation, pleading preparation, discovery, court appearances, and trials for various types of civil suits. They will also represent the City's Police Department and its officers in Pitchess Motions, as directed by the City Attorney or Chief Assistant City Attorney. Occasionally, they may also represent management in hearings involving City employee disciplinary matters. To be considered for this position, candidates must have graduated from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctorate degree and have at least 5 years of experience as a practicing trial attorney within a municipal law office or private firm that has contracted with a public agency for legal services. They must also be a current member in good standing with the California State Bar Association and possess a valid California Class C driver's license. Minimum Qualifications: - Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctorate degree. - Five (5) years' experience as a practicing trial attorney within a municipal law office or private firm that has contracted with a public agency for legal services. - Current member in good standing with the California State Bar Association. - Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record. - State and Federal jury trial experience is desirable.
