A law firm is seeking an Assistant General Counsel - Discovery and Records to manage legal affairs related to client file transfers and discovery in internal firm matters. This role focuses on responding to subpoenas, discovery requests, and ensuring proper legal review of firm records. The Assistant General Counsel will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, manage preservation holds, and advise on discovery compliance processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee discovery related to internal firm matters, including advising the Office of the General Counsel, partners, associates, and business professionals.
  • Manage the preparation of responses to discovery requests and subpoenas.
  • Assist with internal investigations and meet with requesting parties to discuss the scope of discovery responses.
  • Implement and manage preservation holds in collaboration with the Office of the General Counsel and the Information Governance department.
  • Collaborate with the Information Governance department to manage data preservation, collection, and review protocols.
  • Manage the scoping and review of information gathered from firm files for discovery, subpoenas, and file transfers.
  • Coordinate closely with the litigation/eDiscovery department regarding project management and vendor costs.
  • Update and refine policies and procedures related to client file transfers, discovery, and related functions.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the firm’s file review attorneys, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
  • Work with outside counsel on the discovery process, and assist with discovery motion practice, including drafting briefs.
  • Support the Office of the General Counsel in aligning internal stakeholders with legal processes and procedures.
  • Stay current on legal developments in discovery, law firm risk management, and regulations affecting the firm.
  • Provide strategic legal guidance on litigation and risk management matters, identifying and addressing litigation risks.
  • Assist in developing and implementing risk management strategies and specific projects.
  • Maintain confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism in all duties.

Job Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of the jurisdiction's Bar.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a litigation attorney managing discovery, including eDiscovery projects for complex litigation matters.
  • Strong knowledge of discovery concepts, procedural rules, and litigation practices.
  • Experience with relational document review databases such as Relativity.
  • Understanding of data privacy regulations and principles.
  • Experience with legal ethics and privilege issues is preferred.
  • Prior experience in law firm risk management and project management is desired.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, iManage, and other firm applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information clearly.

  • Ability to manage litigation risks and support loss prevention efforts.
  • Familiarity with eDiscovery and litigation software platforms.
