Job Title: Assistant Attorney General, Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Department: Attorney General & Department of Law Organization: Virginia Office of the Attorney General Location: Virginia, United States Salary: Commensurate with experience Employment Type: Full-Time (Salaried) Organization Overview The Virginia Office of the Attorney General is the legal advisor and chief legal officer for the state of Virginia. The Attorney General is responsible for providing legal counsel to the Governor, state agencies, and other public officials. Additionally, the department represents the state in all legal matters and enforces state laws to protect the rights and interests of the citizens of Virginia. Job Summary The Assistant Attorney General for Major Crimes and Emerging Threats will play a critical role in the investigation and prosecution of state and federal offenses, with a focus on violent crimes and firearm offenses. This position requires extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system and state government, as well as exceptional legal skills and judgment. The incumbent will work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to ensure successful prosecutions and provide legal advice to key Virginia agencies. The Assistant Attorney General will also assist in the review and drafting of official advisory opinions for the Attorney General and review legislation during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly. Key Responsibilities - Handle own caseload and work with law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute state and federal offenses. - Provide legal advice to key Virginia agencies and assist in the review and drafting of official advisory opinions for the Attorney General. - Review legislation during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly. - Analyze and provide concise, appropriate, practical, and accurate legal advice. - Manage complex cases and provide outstanding legal research and writing skills. Minimum Qualifications - Must be a United States citizen. - Graduated from an accredited law school. - Admitted to the Virginia State Bar or eligible for admission. - Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as good judgment. - Excellent written and oral communication skills. - Ability to analyze and manage complex cases. Preferred Qualifications - Minimum of five years of relevant experience, including prosecutorial experience in Virginia and/or federal courts. - Outstanding legal research and writing skills.
