Job Overview:

A law firm seeks a highly experienced and dynamic Lateral Trusts and Estates Partner to join its boutique practice in Garden City, NY. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Trusts and Estates law, particularly in high-end estate tax planning, and a proven ability to generate and maintain a substantial portable book of business. This role offers the opportunity to work with high-net-worth individuals and families, providing expert legal advice on complex estate planning and tax strategies.

Duties:

  • Provide estate planning services to high-net-worth individuals and families, including drafting wills, trusts, and other legal documents.
  • Advise clients on advanced estate tax planning strategies, such as gift tax planning, generation-skipping transfer taxes, and charitable giving.
  • Handle estate administration and ensure compliance with federal and state estate and gift tax laws.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships, and grow the firm’s trusts and estates practice through business development initiatives.
  • Draft, review, and update estate planning documents including powers of attorney and advance healthcare directives.
  • Represent clients in trust and estate litigation, including will contests and fiduciary disputes (optional).
  • Collaborate with a team of attorneys and staff to deliver comprehensive legal services.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active New York State Bar membership or eligibility for admission by motion.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in trusts and estates law, with a strong focus on high-end estate tax planning.
  • Proven track record of generating and maintaining a portable book of business.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and New York state estate and gift tax laws.
  • Experience with advanced estate planning strategies, such as family limited partnerships, grantor-retained annuity trusts, and charitable remainder trusts.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • LLM in Taxation (preferred, but not required).
  • Membership in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) (preferred, but not required).

Skills:

  • Expertise in trusts and estates law, including tax planning and estate administration.
  • Excellent drafting and legal writing skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Proficient in legal research relevant to trusts and estates.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and client relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain high-net-worth clientele.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team of attorneys and support staff.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to delivering high-quality legal services.
