Job Overview: A law firm in Salt Lake City, UT, is seeking a Patent Engineer, Scientist, or Agent with experience in patent drafting, prosecution, and portfolio management. The ideal candidate will have a background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Optics, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering, focusing on electrical or software applications. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in optics, acoustics, video and audio signal processing, virtual/augmented reality, and microscopy systems and imaging techniques.

Duties:

  • Draft patent applications and prosecute patents before the USPTO, focusing on optics, acoustics, video and audio signal processing, virtual/augmented reality, and microscopy systems and imaging techniques.
  • Manage patent portfolios, including portfolio development, maintenance, and strategic counseling.
  • Conduct patent analysis and opinions of counsel, including freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and non-infringement analyses.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and inventors to identify and protect intellectual property assets.
  • As necessary, participate in inter partes reviews (IPRs) and other post-grant proceedings.
  • Stay updated on new developments in patent law and industry trends.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Optics, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering (with an electrical or software focus).
  • 2+ years of patent drafting and prosecution experience at a law firm or in-house.
  • Experience in optics, acoustics, video and audio signal processing, virtual/augmented reality, or microscopy systems and imaging techniques preferred.
  • Experience with software and AI is a plus.
  • Graduate-level experience or an advanced technical degree is advantageous.
  • Admission to the USPTO is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with internal and external clients, attorneys, and staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
