Counsel or Senior Counsel (Legislative) - Job Description Organization: Policing Project at New York University School of Law Job Title: Counsel or Senior Counsel (Legislative) Experience: At least 5 years of professional experience, but open to applicants with less experience Overview: The Policing Project at New York University School of Law is seeking a Counsel or Senior Counsel to join our legislative team. This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge criminal legal system reform and racial justice issues, and to contribute to shaping policy that promotes transparency, equity, and democratic engagement in public safety. The ideal candidate will have experience with legislative drafting and advocacy, as well as a passion for criminal legal system reform and related issues. Responsibilities: - Conduct research and draft legislation to support the Policing Project's legislative efforts - Collaborate with other teams at the Policing Project to tailor legislative approaches to their projects - Provide technical assistance to legislators and advocacy groups on proposed legislation - Develop and maintain relationships with advocacy partners and lawmakers - Educate policymakers, advocates, and the media about pressing policing reform issues and policy solutions - Track policing reform legislation and determine when to engage Desired Experience & Qualifications: - . required - At least 5 years of professional experience (but open to applicants with less experience) - Experience with legislative drafting and the legislative process - Familiarity with constitutional law, criminal procedure, policing and public safety, racial justice, and civil rights/civil liberties - Familiarity with social science research and methodology - Strong written communication skills - Exceptional attention to detail - Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and develop professional relationships - Excellent judgment and the ability to manage multiple projects independently Salary and Benefits: Salary for this position ranges between $100,000 and $135,000, commensurate with experience.
