'A criminal law paralegal is a paralegal who works in the area of criminal law. Some criminal law paralegals work for private defense firms that represent individuals accused of committing crimes. Other criminal law paralegals work for state and federal agencies that prosecute people accused of committing crimes. Criminal law paralegals assist criminal law attorneys with a wide variety of tasks, including communicating with clients, helping draft pleadings to be filed in state and federal court, and helping lawyers prepare for trials. Because criminal law paralegals are not attorneys and have not been admitted to the bars of any state, criminal law paralegals must always work under the direction of a practicing attorney.
