In honor of the holiday, President Bush released a statement describing Law Day as "an opportunity to celebrate the Constitution and the laws that protect our rights and liberties and to recognize our responsibility as citizens to uphold the values of a free and just society." According to Bush, "the strength of our legal system requires the ongoing commitment of every citizen."
In 1958, when he established Law Day, President Eisenhower's proclamation stated that "it is fitting that the people of this Nation should remember with pride and vigilantly guard the great heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under law which our forefathers bequeathed to us."
Both Eisenhower and Bush and most other presidents in between have asked the American people to observe the holiday by planning and participating in events that bring attention to it and celebrate the laws that make our nation what it is. In response, many universities plan student events. One example of such an event is the lecture that Arizona State University hosted this year with the Judicial Branch of Arizona.
