Gloria Allred Joins NY Bar" vspace="5" width="200" /> On Tuesday, celebrity attorney Gloria Allred issued a statement announcing that she's now licensed to practice in New York. According to NY Daily News, New York does not have any reciprocity agreement with California, where Allred is a practicing lawyer. She didn't say when she appeared at the bar examination in New York.

Announcing her new status, Allred, 71, said, "I look forward to asserting, protecting and vindicating the legal rights of women and minorities in New York and assisting them in their right to enjoy equal protection under the law."

Allred has been practicing for the last 37 years, and is a partner in the Los Angeles law firm Allred, Maroko & Goldberg. She has several cases in New York including one in which she is representing more than a score of people who allege that they had been sexually abused while studying at the Horace Munn School. She had previously received temporary permission to argue the mater in the state.

Allred was sworn in to the New York bar on September 25 by Karen K. Peters, the first woman justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York for the Third Judicial Department.

Allred did not announce any immediate plans to open an office in New York, however,with growing case loads, which seem to be the next natural step: either opening a office of her own firm, or tying up with a big NY firm.

The Bloomberg Businessweek reported Allred saying in a phone interview, "Two days after being admitted, I'm going to be seeing clients all day … I can't wait to get started."

Allred has been instrumental in exposing and bringing to justice high-profile people charged with sexual abuse or similar allegations across the country. Her most recent celebrity case involved representing the former San Diego communications director who sued ex-mayor Bob Filner and the city for sexual harassment. She had also counseled Jodie Fisher, whose accusations led the CEO of Hewlett Packard to reach a confidential settlement and leave the company.
