Because job seekers tend to be disorganized about scheduling their interviews and other visits, they end up wasting a lot of time. For example, they will arrange one interview, but not make plans about how to spend the remainder of the day. However, the Job-Club method allows you to make full use of all your time in order to get a job more quickly.

Let's assume that you spend the early part of the morning on the phone, arranging interviews. Before you leave home to make your visits, plan your activities for the rest of the day. If you arranged three interviews, decide which to go to first, which second, and which last.

Also consider what else you could do between interviews:

  • Telephone calls. Are there any calls you could make—for example to people whom you could not reach by phone during the morning?
  • Visiting nearby companies. Are there companies you could visit that are near one of the interview locations? If so, phone them and arrange another interview. Or perhaps you can visit some company that wasn't willing to arrange a definite time for an interview but did suggest that you drop in to fill out an application form.
  • Visiting friends. Do you have friends near one of the interview locations whom you could visit to discuss jobs they might have heard about? If so, phone them and tell them you might be dropping in.
  • Revisiting companies. Are there some places where you have already been interviewed that are near today's location? You could call or drop in again.

On the "Places-to-Go Schedule," write your scheduled activities for the rest of the day. A sample form is shown on the following page.

The form includes spaces for the name and address of the company, the name of the person to whom you should speak, and other activities. In the "Places to Go" column, list the places in the order in which you will be visiting them. In the "Other Activities" column, list the other miscellaneous activities you plan to carry out between visits if time permits, such as making telephone calls, dropping in on a friend, filling out an application, or revisiting a former interviewer.

Also include appointments during weekends and evenings, not just those during the day. (Since many of the friends or relatives you'll be contacting to discuss job opportunities work during the day, they must be contacted during the evening or on weekends.) As you complete each visit or activity, put a check mark next to the listing in the "Completed" column. This lets you keep a record of which activities you have completed.
