Dorothy Canfield paid an undercover agent, posing as a hitman, $5,000 to kill Robert Freyer, the Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney, and instructed to make it look like the recent murder of another district attorney in Kaufman County.
Dorothy Canfield also agreed to pay an undercover officer, $2,500 to injure the local District Attorney, Brett Ligon.
On Monday, Ligon said in a news conference, “Threats against public servants are a direct threat against criminal justice system itself.”
Dorothy confessed to her involvement after she was shown photographs by Texas Rangers from an unrelated crime scene to make her believe that Freyer had been murdered .
Texas Ranger Wende Wakeman, who interviewed Canfield, said, “She’s very cold. She’s not remorseful. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Canfield was originally charged with stealing money from undocumented immigrants who were looking for ways to become U.S. citizens. She made her moves from within the Montgomery County Jail, where she is currently residing.
Canfield wanted to take revenge on the investigators who put her behind bars. Audio records provided by the Montgomery County Police Department also show that she wanted the murder to resemble the recent murders in Kaufman County.
She was charged with solicitation to commit capital murder, and also with solicitation to commit aggravated assault on a public servant.
