Pro bono Work Now Mandatory to Join New York Bar
New York is now the first state in the country to require aspiring lawyers to do pro bono work if they want to join its bar. Every applicant will have to do 50 hours of pro bono work aimed at helping poor people in the state with their legal matters. The decision has been made by the state's chief judge, Jonathan Lippman. Every year, around 10,000 applicants take the New York bar exam. Lippman's decision has not been greeted with widespread enthusiasm. It is been seen by some as placing an undue burden on young law graduates who are themselves struggling with enormous debt and finding a job in a slow job market.
