BLS: Legal Industry Lost 2,700 Jobs in July

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that the US legal services industry lost another 2,700 jobs in July, a 0.23% drop.

The industry employs 1.13 million lawyers and staff.

In July the US economy overall gained a few jobs — the nation's unemployment rate fell from 9.5% in June to 9.4% in July.

Some of the biggest July job losses were at DLA Piper (20 lawyers and 100 staff) and at Fulbright & Jaworski (85 staff).

Mintz Levin Lays Off Associates, Staff
Boston's Mintz Levin has laid off an undisclosed number of attorneys and staff. Online reports say that 15 associates were targeted, amongst others.

The firm has also cut associate compensation, up to 35% based on hours billed.

Blawgs are saying the firm conducted a round of stealth layoffs in February.

Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky & Popeo is a general practice law firm employing 500 attorneys worldwide. Headquartered in Boston, Mintz also has offices in New York City, Washington DC, Stamford, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, San Diego, and London.

Jackson Lewis Acquires Detroit's Rubin Shulman
Employment law firm Jackson Lewis has acquired Detroit, Michigan's Rubin Shulman, bringing on the firm's five attorneys.

Allan S. Rubin joins Jackson Lewis as a partner; he is a nationally recognized trial and appellate attorney. He graduated cum laude from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

Lawrence B. Shulman joins as of counsel; he handles complex civil and criminal litigation. He previously headed the Criminal Defense, Forfeiture & Licensing practice group at Fried Saperstein Abbatt.

They bring along Christina A. Daskas, Neil B. Pioch and John C. Signorino, who join as associates. The Rubin Shulman team brings Jackson Lewis's Detroit headcount to 10 attorneys.

In March, Jackson Lewis merged with Omaha, Nebraska's Berens & Tate.

Founded in 1958, Jackson Lewis exclusively represents management in workplace law, with 565 attorneys practicing in 41 cities nationwide.
